How Much Insulation Does an Attic Need in Utah?

Cache Valley sits in climate zone 6, where current energy code calls for roughly R-49 to R-60 in attics. In practice that's around 16 to 20 inches of blown fiberglass or cellulose, depending on the product.

Two things that matter more than the raw number. Coverage beats depth: twenty inches in the middle of the attic with bare drywall showing at the eaves performs far worse than an even blanket, and the eaves are exactly where ice dams start. And air sealing beats both: an unsealed attic floor lets warm air convect straight past whatever insulation is sitting on it, which is why we never blow new insulation over an unsealed attic. It buries the problem instead of fixing it, literally.

The full inventory documented for you: recessed can lights, bath fan housings, the attic hatch, top plate gaps, wiring penetrations, chimney and flue chases, whole-house fan openings. The 1970s and 80s homes across North Logan and Hyde Park frequently have older non-IC recessed cans, which by design cannot be buried in insulation, so they leak heat no matter how deep the insulation goes.

Attic Ventilation Explained (and the Mistakes We Find Most)

The goal is counterintuitive to most homeowners: you want your attic cold in winter. An attic that tracks close to outside temperature can't melt the snowpack from below, which means no ice dams, no deck frost, and no condensation rotting your sheathing from the inside.


The working spec is about one square foot of net free vent area per 300 square feet of attic floor, split roughly evenly between intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge. The split is where most systems fail. Four mistakes we find constantly in the valley:


1. Ridge vent with no working soffit intake. With nowhere else to draw from, the vent pulls its air out of your living space through every ceiling gap. This makes heat loss worse, not better.


2. Soffit vents blocked by insulation. Extremely common after a previous blow-in job done without baffles. The vents exist, they're just buried.


3. Gable vents left open alongside a ridge vent. The ridge vent short-circuits to the gables and never pulls air along the roof deck to the eaves, which is the part that matters for ice dams.


4. Powered attic fans running in winter. They depressurize the attic and pull heated air up out of your house. In this climate they usually make dams worse while adding a power bill.

  • How much attic insulation do I need in Logan, Utah?

  • Can insulation go over what's already there?

  • Blown fiberglass or cellulose?

    Both work well at code depth. Fiberglass doesn't settle as much over time; cellulose has slightly better air-blocking character and is made from recycled content. The honest answer is that the air sealing underneath matters more than which one you choose, and any insulation contractor who leads with the product instead of the prep is selling backwards.

  • Do you install the insulation yourselves?

    Ventilation, baffles, eave detailing, fan terminations, and sealing at roof penetrations are roofing work and we do all of it. Blown-in insulation and whole-house air sealing are a separate trade, so we document exactly what your attic needs, tell you what it should cost, and refer you to insulation contractors we trust. You keep the report either way and you're welcome to shop it.

  • Should I use spray foam in my attic?

    Sometimes, but rarely as the default. Closed-cell foam at the roof deck creates a sealed, conditioned attic, which is a legitimate approach for cathedral assemblies and homes with ductwork in the attic. It also costs several times more than sealing and blowing, and it changes how the roof deck dries. We'll walk you through when it's justified and when it isn't.

  • Do I need a vapor barrier in my attic?

    In cold climates the priority is stopping air movement rather than adding a vapor barrier on top of insulation, and a poorly placed barrier can trap moisture. Air sealing the ceiling plane does the job that people usually hope a vapor barrier will do.

  • My bathroom fan vents into the attic. Is that a big deal?

    Yes. Every shower puts moisture directly against a cold roof deck, where it becomes frost in January and drips as "roof leaks" during the first thaw. It's one of the most common and most fixable problems we find, and it's frequently the actual source of a "mystery leak."

  • Do you do the roof and the attic at the same time?

    That's the ideal sequence. Ventilation and eave detailing are far easier to correct while the roof is open, and doing both together means the new roof starts life over an attic that won't age it early.
